Awareness
A couple days a friend asked what I was doing for breast cancer awareness month and the truth is, I hadn't thought about it.
What am I doing for breast cancer awareness month?
I've participated and donated in countless BC walks and events in the past. Now it's personal. Even typing this feels weird. Perhaps I am in denial? God, I'd love to hear from other survivors about this. And if I am being completely transparent, some days I cannot believe it's real. The grieving and healing process is so complex. Most days I am out going about business as usual then suddenly I am bawling my eyes out hosting DE most amazing pity party.
The truth is I still don't know what I am doing for Breast Cancer Awareness month. This journey has now become very personal; every month is breast cancer awareness month. So I guess the answer to that question is: The same thing I've been practicing for the past year. Being kinder to myself. Working on being a support for other survivors. Eating well. Praying hard and having some deep conversations with God. Thinking of ways to show up differently to support those who have not been as fortunate as me. Giving myself grace. Working on regaining my physical strength. Practicing mindfulness. Honing my skills and doing what I love.
Yeah! I entered a race/walk or two. Let's see how that goes.
To my survivors, I don't know that there are any right words to comfort you. To comfort us. I know it's day by day. I know it's moment by moment. I know love and laughter lives right alongside pain and sadness. That's life. We learn to live again and again and again.
I am thankful. So very truly thankful for it all.
December isn't officially Breast Cancer Awareness month but...you know...for us...every month is awareness month.
See you on December 13.
